How Long Should You Leave Your Bokashi Bucket to Ferment?

One of the great things about Bokashi composting is its flexibility. You don't need to follow a strict fermentation schedule; there's no need to wait after filling your bucket before emptying it.

As soon as you start adding food waste to your Bokashi One Bucket and sprinkling it with Bokashi One Mix, the fermentation process begins. Once your bucket is full, you can leave the contents to continue fermenting until you're ready to transfer them to your garden soil or another composting system. Or you can empty your bucket straight away.

Do You Have to Wait Two Weeks Before Emptying Your Bokashi Bucket?

No, you don't have to, but you can!

Adding Bokashi One Mix to your food waste starts the fermentation process, which helps preserve the waste and prevents it from putrefying or rotting. This allows food waste to be collected and stored in an airtight Bokashi bucket for many months.

There's no rush to empty your bucket. The food waste can be stored until you're ready to add it to your garden soil or another composting system. However, we recommend limiting storage to eight weeks in total to help prevent lingering odours in your bucket.

Remember to keep draining the "Bokashi Juice" throughout the process.

If You Have Two Bokashi Buckets

Having two buckets gives you the flexibility to empty them when convenient. Simply leave the first bucket to ferment while filling the second, ensuring you always have a bucket available for your food scraps.

If You Have Just One Bokashi Bucket

You don't need to wait! You can empty your bucket as soon as it's full.

Bokashi composting is easy, and you can make it work around your home, your garden and your routine.
